Weird Ramen Flavors

Would You Eat It? Weird Ramen Flavors!

It’s no secret that Japan loves weird flavors, even if they’re almost inedible! It’s always exciting to try something new and weird and live to tell the tale. Ramen is a huge staple in Japanese cuisine so there’s no doubt that there are some very strange variations of ramen on the market.

1. Ice Cream Ramen

We thought that this flavor would be ramen that was made out of ice cream but upon looking up a picture, we were shocked! A bowl of your regular soy sauce based broth ramen with an ice cream cone sitting on top. The reviews on food blogs act ually approved of this unusual pairing, and we started to see why. Some of the JC Staff have a habit of eating French fries dipped in a milkshake, so we could see how the creamy and sweet flavor could balance out the salty broth. However, the thought of a full ice cream cone in ramen was disgusting to some.

2. Coffee Milk Ramen, Alkaline Ramen, and Cocoa Ramen

[caption id="attachment_1261" align="aligncenter" width="311"]alkalineramen Source:[/caption] Coming from the same shop as the ice cream ramen, these three flavors do exist and are on the menu! While we could see how coffee milk ramen and cocoa ramen would be made (Just add coffee milk and cocoa to the broth, right?), we didn’t quite understand the alkaline ramen. We thought maybe it was ramen made with alkaline water, but the dish is literally a bowl of ramen with batteries on the side. It’s up to you if you want them in your ramen! The owner of the shop got strange flavor suggestions from neighborhood children, and as a joke, he added the suggestions to the menu. Who knew that it would take off and attract adventurous eaters?

3. Chocolate Ramen

Love chocolate and don’t want to wait till after your meal to have some? Chocolate ramen may be your thing! A chocolate bar is broken into pieces and placed in a bowl of ramen along with green onions and pork. As the chocolate melts, the broth will get thicker and take on a more chocolate flavor. This dish was offered in February as a Valentine’s day promotion by the popular ramen chain Mensho.

4. Strawberry/Pineaple Ramen

We didn’t consider pineapple ramen too weird as acidic fruits tend to go well with meat, but we did wonder about strawberry ramen that was served with condensed milk. Pineapple goes great with pork chops so having pineapple juice in the broth along with the slices of the fruit on top actually seemed like a tasty combination! After the huge success of the pineapple ramen, the same shop Papapapapain released their “Susususustrawberry ramen”.  We researched on Japanese foodie blogs about the strawberry and condensed milk ramen and found that it was also another hit! The strawberries gave a sweet and slightly tangy flavor to the meaty broth and adding the condensed milk played up with sweet and salty combination that Japanese people love.

5. Hiroshima Taberarenai Kurai Mazui Ramen

The literal translation 0of this strange ramen’s name is “Hiroshima ramen that tastes so disgusting that it’s almost impossible to eat.” Reports say that the smell is like rotting garbage and with the first sip of the broth, a pungent odor and taste will fill your mouth and nose. Topped with a whole horse mackerel, Kouya tofu (free-dried tofu that has been rehydrated), and okra, this ramen is also served with a side of steamed pig ear and feet. At the hefty price at 1,800 yen (About $18 USD), the restaurant offers a challenge to get the bill waived! Eat the entire bowl and sides under 6 minutes and 30 seconds and your meal is free and you get to come back for another free bowl of regular ramen. If you can’t eat it all under the time limit, but you finish it all, you still get it for free. Can’t stomach it? You will have to pay the full price. The thought of ramen that smells like rotting garbage has us not wanting to ever trying this challenge!

Would you try these ramen? What other weird ramen flavors can you think of that you think would be edible? It would make for an interesting experiment to try with friends! Drop us a comment below and let us know your thoughts!
