What are Yakisoba Noodles?

How to Make Japanese Fried Noodles

One of the most delicious dishes in Japanese cuisine is the Yakisoba, made of noodles, vegetables, and meat. This Yakisoba is a traditional Japanese stir-fried noodle dish that is finished with an excellent tangy flavor and sweet and savory sauce. This dish calls for shiitake mushrooms, cabbage, and meat. Slices of chicken or beef may be used, although pork is the preferred meat for Yakisoba noodles.

This Yakisoba first appeared as So-su Yakisoba in the 1930s. Then in the late 1950s, it became a well-liked kid's snack at many dagashi-ya or Japanese shops. Since that time, Yakisoba has become a symbol of Japanese street food and is prepared and eaten both at home and in many Japanese restaurants. However, yakisoba food stands are highly common at school events, festivals, snack stores, and other gatherings since they are simple to make. Here's how to make the best Yakisoba noodles from the comfort of your home.

Make this Japanese dish at home using the noodles, protein, and toppings of your choice. Yakisoba only needs five ingredients to be made:

1. Noodles

Chukamen or chukasoba, which are yellow noodles, are commonly used to make Yakisoba. Yakisoba noodles are available at Japanese groceries or can be made with other Japanese noodles like ramen dry noodles, yaki udon, fresh noodles, egg noodles, or soba noodles (wheat flour noodles) which taste and feel like yakisoba noodles.

2. Yakisoba Sauce

Yakisoba sauces are widely available in bottles or packets. They include a lot of MSG and are hard to find outside of Japan, so it is recommended to make an original mixture of the Yakisoba sauce ingredients at your own home with Worcestershire sauce, oyster sauce, low sodium soy sauce, stir fry soy sauce, mirin, and ketchup.

3. Meat

Yakisoba is most frequently made with a thinly sliced pork belly. It not only gives the noodles a ton of flavor but also provides some fat that prevents them from clinging to one another. Although pork belly is frequently used to make Yakisoba, other protein sources also work. Try making Yakisoba with chicken thighs, chopped hot dogs, shrimp, or tofu for a vegetarian option.

4. Vegetable

Although Yakisoba's traditional trio of vegetables is made up of cabbage, carrots, and green onions, any vegetable combination will do. The simplest veggies to stir-fry are those that cook quickly, such as carrots, green cabbage, bok choy, bell pepper, green onion, mushrooms, and bean sprouts.

5. Toppings

How to Make Japanese Fried Noodles

1. First, prepare the sauce, mix all of the ingredients for the yakisoba sauce in a bowl. Place aside.

2. Boil the Yakisoba noodles according to the directions on the package. As soon as the noodles are cooked through, drain them and give them a thorough rinse in cold water while swirling the noodles with your fingers. Drop the pre-cooked yakisoba noodles with both hands, then swiftly yank them back up to wring out as much water as possible. Toss the cooked noodles with two teaspoons of vegetable oil to keep them from sticking to one another.

3. Heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat in a large frying pan or skillet before stir-frying the chicken and vegetables. Cook the chicken pieces until golden brown. Cook the carrots and onion slices for an additional 2 minutes or until the onion softens. Add the green onions, cabbage, and mushrooms. Combine everything and cook for a further minute.

4. Finish the dish by adding the Yakisoba noodles to the wok and then adding the sauce. Use tongs to toss everything together. 2 more minutes of cooking are required to reheat the noodles fully.
